Gabriele Lamonaca is as Roman as Julius Caesar!
Born and raised in the Eternal City, Gabriele moved to the Big Apple in 2008 to study English and graduate in a Bachelor Degree in Chemistry at St. Francis College. In the meantime he took a job at a thriving Italian restaurant in the heart of Manhattan, but what started as a part-time job quickly became his chosen path and he spent the next few years working his way through the restaurant industry and gaining experience in every area of the business.
As he built his career, Gabriele noticed a gap in the market; specifically, the pizza market. Despite the countless styles, shapes and sizes to choose from, there wasn’t a single pizza joint in the USA offering Roman-style pizza (which is traditionally baked rectangular and served by the square). And so he decided, he would open the first one! Armed with a solid business plan, committed investors and the passion of a gladiator, Gabriele was on his way to n opening his own pizzeria Romana when COVID-19 struck the globe. With his plans on indefinite hold and facing weeks of enforced lockdown, he channelled his creativity into his passion and began experimenting with different ingredients and combinations.
He created an instagram account to share his “unregular” creations and soon his friends started asking for a taste. Inspired by his Grandmother’s stories of bartering goods like bread and eggs during the war, Gabriele decided he would barter his pizzas for something else home made or of personal significance to the other person. As Unregular Pizza’s following started to grow, more and more barter requests came flooding in, offering a variety of delicious treats in exchange for Gabriele’s fantastic creations.
After a year of bartering, numerous appearances in both national and international media and with an ever-growing following, Unregular Pizza is opening its doors and Gabriele’s dream is finally a reality!
